Dr. Ranaweera pioneered the development of cost-effective, economically viable micropropagation techniques for national tea breeding programs and commercial nursery setups. His academic credentials include a PhD and an MPhil in Crop Science from the University of Peradeniya, alongside a specialized BSc in Agriculture from the University of Ruhuna. Globally recognized for his work in nuclear agricultural biotechnology, he has collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the genetic improvement of tea through mutation breeding and has led state- funded national projects for the Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy (SL CARP). Furthermore, he maintains active memberships with the National Science Foundation and the Institute of Biology, Sri Lanka, while contributing significantly to the scientific community as an institutional research reviewer, symposium technical judge, and external university supervisor for advanced plant breeding and biotechnology research.
